When you study kinematics, that is the motion of objects, you study it without considering the forces that cause the motion. In athletics, forces are always unpredictable, yet we know that improving neck strength reduces and improves control over perturbation-induced head kinematics. Tackling or being tackled in football, heading in soccer, wrestling, mixed martial arts and numerous other sports all have an intentional or disruptive alteration of the head and necks normal state and function.

Strong necks can improve control over a head’s kinematics. Neck muscles stabilize the head increasing resistance to impact and improve sensorimotor control and help maintain the participating activities’ correct posture. The correct head position can make one more efficient, faster and safer in almost any activity that is competed in. Control is crucial for preventing injury especially in high-impact situations. Strengthening the neck is an important part of all exercise programs and never should be overlooked or neglected.
