Training The Back Of The Neck

neckSplenius Capitis and Cervicis, Semispinalis Capitis and Cervicis, the small Spinalis Capitis, Longissimus Cervicis lay underneath the Trapezius are all involved in neck extension.  To develop this tissue maximally requires some technique when training on a 4 or 5 way neck machine.

Young athletes, particularly females use a strategy of pushing their chests forward to do neck extension.  This strategy allows them to do the exercise almost exclusively with the trapezius muscles with very little emphasis of the inner layers of the neck musculature involved in extension.
