Resistance Training and the Brain

Pendulum Shoulder Incline

As we age we lose muscle mass, strength and muscular function which degrades our workable abilities, there is also    cognitive decline. Loss of brain cells due to longevity augments a decrease in brain volume, and cognition.

A healthy lifestyle both physically, and mentally may be the best defence against the changes of an aging brain. Studies repeatedly show physical exercise enhances cognitive functions in young, as well as older adults.

What we know is that resistance training decelerates brain aging and that cross-sectional, and epidemiological studies repeatedly show the effect of exercise enhancing cognitive functions.

Research studies confirm that moderate intensity exercise is related to increased performance in working memory, and cognitive flexibility and that high-intensity exercise improves the speed of information processing.

The following are a few of the many studies about resistance training and brain health:

GeroScience is a leading international journal focused on the biology of aging, in 2023 they published, Strength gains after 12 weeks of resistance training correlate with neurochemical markers of brain health in older adults: a randomized control 1H-MRS study. They concluded –  “Overall, findings suggest that resistance training seems to elicit alterations in various neurometabolites that correspond to exercise-induced ‘preservation’ of brain health, while simultaneously having its beneficial effect on augmenting muscle functional characteristics in older adults.”

Frontiers in Psychiatry is one of the largest journals in its field, peer-reviewed covering translational, basic, and clinical research to improve mental health care. In 2025 published,

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of resistance exercise on cognitive function in older adults. The findings were – “Resistance exercise exerts selective benefits on cognitive domains in older adults, particularly enhancing overall cognition, working memory, verbal learning, and spatial memory. “

Brain health is one of the many great reasons to add Pendulum strength training equipment to your facility or home, a ‘smart choice’, and an important reason to Get Strong.
