In 1894 at Yale University’s Department of Psychology, Edward Wheeler Scripture, Miss Theodate L. Smith, and Miss Emily Brown through their studies discovered what they labeled as ‘cross-education’. Simplifying their research it noted – if you practiced writing with one hand, skill was gained in writing with the other.
In 1945 Thomas L. DeLorme was experimenting with various techniques to treat skeletal/muscular disabilities; he observed that progressively overloaded unilateral exercise increased the strength in the symmetric muscle groups of the contralateral limb.
Two years later in 1947 Francis A.Hellebrandt, A.M.Parrish and S.J. Houtz from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond Va. suggested that neuromuscular cross-education may have a therapeutic use. Hellebrandt a few years later wrote that “..the functional capacity of the contractile tissues subjected to direct training has a significant effect on the power, and endurance of homologous muscle groups of the contralateral unpracticed limb.”
Sports Medicine Open Journal in 2025 published, Cross-Education of Strength: From Theory to Practice in Contemporary Sports Rehabilitation-A Narrative Review and Clinical Implications – they concluded – “Unilateral resistance training in the healthy limb appears to represent a cost-effective and accessible rehabilitation strategy for athletes who are unable to work on their injured limb from the early stages of rehabilitation”

The research historically on unilateral exercise is quite clear and having access to unilateral strength training equipment is an important consideration in all facilities not only to increase functional strength but to accelerate rehabilitation. A great way to Get Strong.
