Typically adults walk anywhere from 4,000 to 18,000 steps per day. Walking 10,000 steps per day has been a target for changing a sedentary lifestyle and to improve one’s health.
Stepping 10,000 times is seemingly a lot of movement but understand we contract our neck muscles in multiple directions every few seconds which becomes an enormous daily number.
As neck movements occur, rapid messages are relayed to our brains about the position of the head through sensors in our necks. Blood is pulsed, air inhaled for the body and brain, hormones are released throughout the body and deploy immune cells through lymph vessels and lymph nodes to support the immune system.
Through bones, tubes, cords, cartilage, contracting tissue, nerves that transport electrical signals, the neck and its functions are pertinent to our existence and we must not forget that it is a shock absorber nor it’s function in the deceleration of movements to the head, as well as the importance of the head and neck to the body’s mobility in athletic endeavors.
In strength training there is no more important area than the musculature of the neck. An area that should never be neglected, never overlooked and always a part of a strength training regime. Get and keep the neck Strong.
