Neck Strength

Pendulum 5-Way Neck Machines

Head and neck trauma is always a risk for an athlete when involved in contact sports. Proper technique is not only for acquiring the skills necessary to compete but for the safety of the participants. Along with skill development the acquisition of fitness and muscular strength significantly adds to athletic performance, as well as a reduction of the risk of injury.

One of the most important exercises in contact sports is neck development. Having a Pendulum 4 or 5-Way Neck Machine is a must in all facilities.

The Journal of Sports Science and Medicine in Sport study,

A tackler correctly adhering to the tackle instruction in a front-on, one-on-one torso tackle alters the peak inertial head kinematics of the ball carrier but not the tackler. This study indicates that an athlete can positively reduce their injury incidence, if they tackle properly and yet, it does not reduce the chance of trauma to the opponent. This inturn indicates the need for all playing contact sports to strengthen the neck area.

In the Journal of Primary Prevention, Neck strength: a protective factor reducing risk for concussion in high school sports, reinforces the need for making sure neck strengthening is an integral part of athletics.

American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Risk Reduction of Concussion in Athletes: Do Neck Size or Neck Strength Make a Difference? “In conclusion, cervical strengthening programs have been shown to be feasible and beneficial for athletes to decrease their risk of sustaining a sport-related concussion, though the optimal duration, intensity, and frequency has yet to be determined.”

Skill acquisition, conditioning, muscular development are all equally important in the development of athletes in sport.
